A wedding cake can be 1, 2 or 3 tiers. They can be held on top each other with pedestals or staggered and even arranged. You can choose to have cup cakes or pieces instead of a solid cake to be cut. There is so much choice.
1 tiered cakes need to be boldly iced and of a size greater than 12 inches to be impressive. Or they can be placed on a pedestal to give it body.
A 2 tier cake is usually a 10 inch and 12 inch combination unless a pedestal is used. The design can overflow from the top tier on to the bottom tier or it can be separate depending on your choice.
Most brides love the 3 tier cake which looks bold and commanding. The 3 tier cake uses a combination of 8, 10, 12 inches but can also be increased to a 10, 12, 14 inch combination. Again pedestals can be used to separate the cakes or be left out completely.
4 or more layers can also be used to emphasize a cake.
A new trend has been for wedding cakes to consist of cup cakes or large pieces which are then served as desert at the wedding.
